Some friends and I at the Mini-Expo

One of the baffling tendencies of humanity is to rank and sort comparable items for entertainment and organization.  We like to place everything from best to worst, regardless if it’s brands, teams or people.  But in reality, these rankings are essentially meaningless.  Take sports polls for example.  Football fans are obsessed with the AP Poll, Coaches Poll and BCS Computer Rankings because they determine who plays in what postseason bowl and which team is “better” than another team.  But the truth is that any football team on any given weekend can beat any team, regardless if they’re ranked or not.  When it comes time for the coin toss and the teams take the field, the number before a schools name is just that, a number – nothing less and certainly nothing more.

Observations

Beijing Botanical Gardens, pretty right?

School hasn’t started yet, so I’ve been on my own the past couple days.  In trying to use this time productively, I’ve attempted to turn these empty days into a science experiment of figuring out the culture and environment without third party influences.  And since good science is good observation (Avatar!), I figured I’d share some of what I’ve seen.  Of course, since this is a genuine scientific endeavor, I’m unwilling to reach conclusions and make concrete statements, so enjoy these thoughts and observations on various topics with an understanding that it’s unpolished and has no deeper meaning beyond what’s been said.
